Star Trek and What Happens Now?

Trek Movie PosterStar Trek lived up to the reviews and is a fun, action-packed movie. A lot of it works for people who never got into the original series, and it works for the casual fan. Shoot, it even works for people like me — who grew up watching the series in multiple repeats.

I never got into the other series in the Star Trek universe. It was always The Original Series (TOS) that my memories drift to when I hear Star Trek mentioned. So, what happens now?

By the end of the movie, so many changes have occurred in my understanding of these famous characters. Nothing can be assumed. I want another movie, but how will it all play out now?

And yes, I loved the movie and am thinking of going back tomorrow for a repeat viewing. It’s fun, exciting, and fascinating (I need to say that word with an eyebrow cocked up and a slight tilt of the head), but it’s weirdly upsetting.

Adventureland review

This was a cute little movie. Adventureland is a higher grade teen comedy and worth seeing. Here’s my review.

Wheaty Jowls

I’ve written about my diet change. Staying away from refined carbohydrates really has changed my body composition. Though I do eat wheat on the rare occasion, like the going away pizza party yesterday at work, I try to stay away from it. I crave more when I do eat it, so try to make it a rare food in my diet.

Free the Animal has a good post about wheat and how it affects our faces. He has some great shots of actors and how they aged. Their faces look bloated and jowly. And yes, age will have its effect. Yet he also shows how his face has changed. Here’s actor Val Kilmer’s face:

Kilmer's face

Check out the other examples at Free the Animal. I’ll never have a Katherine Hepburn-type angular face. Yet I do have cheekbones and they’re showing up more and more. Giving up wheat and sugar makes a big difference.

My Dancing with the Stars Fascination

I’ve written before about my fascination with the Dancing with the Stars show. Considering that I have no cable or network TV signal, I’m watching the show via YouTube. Well, it’s a shock to go to  YouTube and see that the person you least expect to be voted off tonight, gets kicked off.

Yes, Lil’ Kim scored lower than Ty Murray. What were the fans thinking? Ty must have lots of them out there. I thought he’d go tonight and that the semi-finals would get really tricky. Gilles Marini, Melissa Rycroft, and Lil’ Kim were my top three contenders.

Obviously, I don’t have this show pegged. Maybe that’s why I find it fascinating.

State of Play

Just saw State of Play. It’s a nice little thriller with a good cast. Face it, anything with Helen Mirren in it (she plays the newspaper editor) is going to be above average.

State of Play was certainly much better than Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. I had to sit through that one this last weekend. Well, we must see the dogs to appreciate the better films.

Monsters vs Aliens review

Okay, I did like this one. Though Monsters vs Aliens is not a perfect animated film, there’s plenty of tidbits to enjoy. Here’s the review.

Duplicity review

Here’s the review for Duplicity. I think that as there has been plenty of time since I’ve seen this, I’ve found myself not as impressed with the movie. I’d drop the grade to a “B” — still a good movie, but certainly not memorable.

Movies and Dancing

This video I found over at Film Experience’s place made me smile. I do love watching dance scenes in movies. Now, the video does show lots of dance sequences in musicals, but there are plenty of dramas represented also. Gilda and Gone with the Wind have their moment. Even scenes from Fellini movies show up.

Movies and Dancing are a perfect mix.

May Day Party

Last night I jumped into Second Life to join the Friday night Thinking Liberally dance. The theme, since it was May 1st, was May Day. Yep, we honored working folks everywhere by wearing red and waving red flags. Solidarity, baby!

It was also Jillan McMillan’s Rez Day party, which really makes it a good reason to join in the fun. Jillan is one of the dedicated folks in Second Life who is able to organize all kinds of parties and conferences. She’s just an all around good person, with a wicked sense of humor. The party was at her place. She decorated appropriately:

I took this shot of Lumi, one of the Thinking Liberally regulars. When the theme is RED, she went all out:

A red time was had by all! Workers of the World Unite!

Race to Witch Mountain review

I swear that I’ll catch up to posting all my reviews one day.  I’m about two months behind and have several that I can post. To start on my catching up process, here’s my review of Race to Witch Mountain. You can tell that I do have a thing about Dwayne Johnson.
