Kinky Boots
Rated PG-13; Directed by Julian Jarold; Starring Joel Edgerton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sarah-Jane Potts

“Kinky Boots” is one of those genial British films that wobble back and forth between outrageous comedy and heavy drama. With a good cast and a fun story it offers some laughs and even some music. After all, drag queens in movies always sing. Oh, yes, “Kinky Boots” involves a drag queen: Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The fun comes from Lola helping out a foundering shoe factory with a new shoe line, one designed for transvestites.

After his father’s death, young Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) reluctantly takes over his family’s shoe factory and discovers that things aren’t going too well with the business. In fact, it looks like the business of making traditional shoes just isn’t paying off. Thinking of folding the factory, he is told by one of his feisty factory members, Lauren (Sarah-Jane Potts), that if he really hated firing people then he better find a new niche market for shoes. One night in London, he stumbles upon that niche.

Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a drag queen with style in abundance, hates the shoes he buys; the women’s shoes just can’t hold up to his weight. When Charlie attempts to rescue Lola from a gang of street toughs the two meet. Coming from the stodgy north of England, Charlie isn’t too comfortable with Lola, but when he realizes that Lola may just be the answer to saving the factory he decides to create some boots that meet Lola’s needs. As Lola says, he wants “two and a half feet of pure tubular sex.” Kinky boots can do just that.

With that concept, the movie takes some safe routes in the script. There are laughs as Lola interacts with the suspicious factory-workers; there’s drama as Lola feels uncomfortable in his/her own skin, and there’s the frenzied build up to an unveiling of the new shoe line in Milan.

The cast helps sell the movie, but Chiwetel Ejiofor is the standout. Seen previously in “Serenity” as the dedicated agent and as Denzel Washington’s partner in “Inside Man,” Chiwetel Ejiofor has star quality to spare. As Lola, he can be as dramatic as he wants, he can sing and dance, plus he gets to wear some lovely frocks – not to mention those pairs of pure sex he gets to strut upon.

A pleasant film, “Kinky Boots” sometimes goes for too much drama, but overall, it makes for a nice movie. Who knows, you might also pick up some great fashion tips.
